After violent arrest of the symbolic leader of Israel’s social justice movement, thousands pour onto streets in rage

On Friday, June 22, 2012 Daphnie Leef, the symbolic leader of the J14 social justice movement in Israel was violently arrested while trying to set up a protest tent. The action was meant to reinvigorate the movement that began on July 14, 2011 when Leef set up a tent in the same place, Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv, sparking a movement of dozens of tent cities and hundreds of thousands on the streets.

In response to her arrest, and that of twelve others, thousands poured onto the streets in Tel Aviv on Saturday night, breaking bank windows and chanting “citizens’ mutiny” as police violently arrested 89. Protests continued on Sunday and many were schedule for the coming weeks.

On July 17 the J14 movement aims to bring a million protesters to the streets in the “March of the Million”.

The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky spoke to activists and protesters, as well as +972 Magazine’s Haggai Matar and Yasha Marmer from the Socialist Struggle Movement.
