Abdallah Abu Rahmah was given a hero’s welcome in the West Bank village of Bil’in after being released from Ofer Prison on Monday. He was greeted by over a hundred and fifty townsfolk who escorted him home waving flags and letting off fireworks in his honor.

Abu Rahmah had helped organize over five years of weekly demonstrations against the separation fence that cuts Bil’in residents off from their agricultural fields and was built on land that the Israeli High Court determined belongs to the village.

Abu Rahmah strode slowly and solemnly through the village, surrounded by friends and family, and upon reaching his home, the crowd spilled into the yard and was treated to coffee and desserts.

Abu Rahmah was released from prison on Monday after serving sixteen months in an Israeli jail for incitement and participating in illegal demonstrations. His cousin, Adeeb Abu Rahmah, was released from an Israeli jail in December 2010 after serving 18 months on similar charges.

“I am very happy to be here with my family and friends, I’m very happy about this,” said Abu Rahmah as he entered his home for the first time in over a year. “But I am very sad about my friends who are still in Israeli jails, I’m very angry about this. I want all Palestinians out of jail.”
