Some 200 Palestinians infiltrated and attacked a settlement outpost in the northern West Bank on Friday morning, according to eyewitnesses.

The witnesses said that Palestinians from a neighboring village entered a hilltop community near the Nofe Yarden outpost in the Shiloh bloc, armed with hoes and axes.

The Palestinians set fire to some structures at the outpost before security services summoned by settler girls arrived at the site.

Nobody was wounded in the incident, though clashes erupted between the sides. Military forces are now trying to stymie the clashes and scatter demonstrations.

The United States has repeatedly called for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to enact a freeze on building in settlements as a prerequisite for renewed peace talks.

Government sources said on Thursday that Netanyahu is willing to accede to a partial freeze, but that he would first approve construction of hundreds of new housing units.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Ehud Barak has declared intention to evacuate all unauthorized West Bank outposts within weeks.

“The defense minister has declared a number of times that the evacuation of illegal outposts is our obligation as a democratic state,” Barak’s office said in a statement released last week. “This is a process which will be implemented in weeks, not years.”
